Hand and Wrist
Common problems around the wrist will include inflamed tendons (tendonitis). A common tendonitis on the thumb side of the wrist is De Quervains tenosynovitis. The joint between the thumb and the wrist is prone to wear and tear/arthritis problems as are the small finger joints in later life.
Symptoms
Tendonitis symptoms include pain over the outer side of the wrist, swelling and occasionally a grating sensation with movement.Arthritis of the finger joints causes enlargement of the joints as well as stiffness, pain and weakness of grip
Treatment
The De Quervains tenosynovitis is treated by use of a resting splint, ultrasound, friction massage and occasionally acupuncture. If these measures fail then an injection of steroid around the tendon can be useful.
There are various treatments for arthritic changes in the hand and wrist. Anti- inflammatory medication may be advised but keeping the joints mobile is essential and often exercise in warm water can keep the joints supple and moving freely.
